How to Pack a Suitcase Like a Pro: Fit Twice in Half the Space

How to Pack a Suitcase Like a Pro: Fit Twice in Half the Space

Posted on October 29, 2026

Overpackers pay baggage fees and dig through chaos. Pro packers fit a week into a carry-on. Here’s the system.

1. Roll, Don’t Fold

Rolling clothes saves serious space and reduces wrinkles compared to flat folding. Roll t-shirts, jeans, and casual wear tightly. The only things worth folding flat: blazers and dress shirts (or use the bundle method below).

2. The Bundle Method for Wrinkle-Free Clothes

Lay your most wrinkle-prone item flat, then layer other clothes on top at angles, place a core (pouch of underwear/socks) in the center, and wrap everything around the core. The tension keeps everything smooth — this is how business travelers pack suits without wrinkles.

3. Use the 5-4-3-2-1 Rule

For a week-long trip: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 pairs of shoes (wear the bulkiest), 2 layers (jacket, sweater), 1 hat. Choose a color palette where everything matches everything — navy, gray, and white is foolproof.

4. Fill Every Dead Space

Shoes are hollow — stuff them with socks, chargers, or underwear. Tuck belts along the suitcase edge. Put small items inside hats. Dead space is wasted space.

5. Wear Your Bulkiest Items

Flying? Wear the boots, the heavy jacket, the jeans. They don’t count against your luggage weight or space when they’re on you.

6. Toiletries: Decant, Don’t Pack Full Bottles

Buy travel-size reusable bottles and decant shampoo and lotions. Full-size bottles are heavy and half of them come home unused. Remember the liquids rule for carry-ons: 100ml max per container.

7. Pack a “First Night” Pouch

Put everything you’ll need on arrival — chargers, toothbrush, change of clothes, medications — in one pouch on top. No digging through the whole case at midnight.

8. The Dirty Laundry Bag

Pack one empty bag for worn clothes. It keeps clean and dirty separated all trip, and makes unpacking at home a one-step job.

The Bottom Line

Roll clothes, bundle the wrinkle-prone stuff, follow 5-4-3-2-1, fill dead spaces, and wear the bulky items. That’s the complete pro packing system — no more overweight baggage fees.
